How long does it take to needlepoint a needlepoint canvas
Compartir
It's the question almost all of us ask before deciding on a tapestry: "how long will it take me to finish it?". This is a completely legitimate question, especially if it's your first project and you want to know what you're getting into. There's no single answer, but we can give you some estimated figures and, most importantly, reassure you: needlepoint is not a race.
The most influential factors
- The size of the tapestry: the larger the surface, the more stitches, that's obvious.
- The number of colors: each thread change takes time, even if it's small.
- Your experience: the first hours are always slower; your hand gains dexterity with practice.
- How much time you dedicate per week: this is the factor that varies most from person to person, and the one that truly determines the timeline.
Estimated time by size
With a dedication of about 3-5 hours per week, these are realistic figures for a beginner embroiderer:
- Small format (up to 20x20 cm): between 2 and 4 weeks.
- Medium format (up to 30x40 cm): between 1 and 3 months.
- Large format (40x50 cm or more): from 3 months onwards, especially if it has many colors or small details.
With more hours dedicated per week, these times shorten quite quickly; with fewer, they simply lengthen, and that's perfectly fine.
Tips to advance faster without getting overwhelmed
- Work in color blocks: finishing an entire color before changing threads saves more time than it seems.
- Set aside a regular time: even if it's just fifteen minutes, consistency adds up more than sporadic marathons.
- Start with the large areas: seeing quick progress at the beginning is the most motivating factor to keep going.
What if I leave it unfinished for a while?
Don't worry, it's completely normal. A well-stored canvas (rolled, not folded, away from humidity) will wait for you perfectly for weeks or months. There's no deadline and no one watching the clock: the only rhythm that matters is yours.
In summary
The time depends mostly on the size and how much you dedicate to it; there's no magic number for everyone. If it's your first tapestry, the most sensible thing is to start with a small or medium format to enjoy the process without stress.
